The Cooperative Extension Service UAF is providing pressure canner gauge testing at the Let’s Grow Sitka 2010 garden event, Sunday, March 14, 2010 from noon until 3:00 pm at the ANB Hall on Katlian Street.
For safety’s sake, all pressure canner gauges should be tested at least once a year. The bacterium, Clostridium botulinum, can survive and grow inside a sealed jar of food producing a poisonous toxin. Even a single taste of food containing this toxin can be fatal. One way to prevent food spoilage is to make certain that the gauge of the pressure canner is accurate when home canning.
Ensure your health safety by having your pressure canner gauge tested. Please bring just the gauge if possible. If you cannot get the gauge off the lid, bring the entire lid, but not the rest of the canner.
Visit the Cooperative Extension booth for this free service and useful information on how to preserve you locally grown and harvested foods.
